Local growers are discovering that proposed FDA regulations would curtail many common techniques, such as using house-made fertilizers and irrigating from creeks.
Jim Crawford, left, of New Morning Farm, says new food safety regulations would be an added expense that would hurt growers operating on the margins. (Evan Halper, Los Angeles Times / February 12, 2014)

February 22, 2014, 11:00 a.m.
HUSTONTOWN, Pa. — Jim Crawford was rushing to load crates of freshly picked organic tomatoes onto trucks heading for an urban farmers market when he noticed the federal agent.
A tense conversation followed as the visitor to his farm — an inspector from the Food and Drug Administration — warned him that some organic-growing techniques he had honed over four decades could soon be outlawed.
“This is my badge. These are the fines. This is what is hanging over your head, and we want you to know that,” Crawford says the official told him.
Crawford’s popular farm may seem a curious place for the FDA to move ahead with a long-planned federal assault on deadly food poisoning. To Crawford’s knowledge, none of the kohlrabi, fennel, sugar snap peas or other crops from hisNew Morning Farm have ever sickened anyone. But he is not the only organic grower to suddenly discover federal inspectors on his land.
When Monsanto (NYSE: MON) acquired The Climate Corporation on November 1, it effectively took control of all of the variables that farmers cannot control on their own. The goal of the acquisition is to provide farmers with more information and tools regarding the climate, and is in-line with Monsanto’s goals of improving agricultural productivity.
Monsanto understands basic biology
Elementary school biology taught us that to grow a plant, one needs a seed, sunlight, and water. Monsanto, DuPont (NYSE: DD) and Syngenta (NYSE: SYT) all provide the one major purchased component that all crop farmers need: seeds with which to grow their crops. Beyond the planting, there is plenty of discrepancy on the other inputs from pesticides to fertilizers, but the seed is the one absolute investment requirement for crop farmers. More…
For those not familiar with the case, a little more than one year ago, Justina’s parents lost custody after disagreeing with a Boston Children’s Hospital diagnosis that their daughter had somatoform disorder, a psychiatric condition. They believed she had mitochondrial disease, a condition she had been receiving treatment for by doctors at Tufts Medical Center.
The parents were accused of “over-medicalizing” their daughter, and are now restricted to 20-minute, monitored phone calls and weekly visits with their child at a DCF facility.
But while Justina’s condition would have presumably improved once she was removed from the care of her “over-medicalizing” parents, Lou Pelletier, the girl’s father, said her condition is rapidly worsening.
WE were being lied about the amount of radiation, INCLUDING turning off the detectors the government has straitened all around America. Because no one will be holding accountable to those misleading statements, the spins continue.
TEPCO admits deliberately using radiation detectors that give deceptively low readings; radiation leaks far worse than reported
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
(NaturalNews) At the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant, radiation isn’t the only thing leaking out. Each week, it seems there’s another small leak of the truth that has been deliberately hidden from the public. Yesterday, TEPCO finally admitted it has been downplaying the ongoing radiation release levels by a factor of almost twenty.
But the real story here is exactly how TEPCO arrived at the deceptively small numbers it has been reporting since the 2011 accident. It turns out (see below) that TEPCO has been deliberately using radiation detectors that “max out” at relatively low levels (i.e. they don’t go higher than 100 mSv). When those detectors are pegged at their max readings, instead of switching to a more capable instrument with a larger detection range, they simply report the maximum detection limit of the smaller detector as the “real” exposure number.
Huh? Yeah. Seriously.
Here’s how we discovered this:
Radiation leak 18 times higher than previously disclosed
According to a TEPCO press release covered in Bloomberg Japan, “TEPCO announced high-dose radiation of hourly 1800 mSv from the tank periphery has been observed.”
This is highly radioactive water leaking from the now-famous “storage tanks” that were never designed to be long-term storage tanks in the first place. Previously, TEPCO told the public these tanks were only leaking 100 mSv per hour, downplaying the actual radiation leak level by almost 95%.
That same story goes on to say:
Ito Tetsuo Professor of Kinki University (radiation biology) said, regarding the level of hourly 1800 mSv, “There is only a thing called death if you stay exposed to this for four hours. One hundred percent of persons will die within 30 days.”
The BBC is also covering this story, just in case you want to see this in English. On the BBC’s page, it says:
Radiation levels around Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant are 18 times higher than previously thought, Japanese authorities have warned.
It now says readings taken near the leaking tank on Saturday showed radiation was high enough to prove lethal within four hours of exposure.
The new reading will have direct implications for radiation doses received by workers who spent several days trying to stop the leak last week, the BBC’s Rupert Wingfield-Hayes reports from Tokyo.
And that’s the understatement of the year. “Direct implications” means the clean-up workers are already dead.

1. TAKE BACK YOUR POWER FILM RELEASE SEPT. 5
The much anticipated documentary from Canadian filmmaker Josh del Sol will debut online and on DVD in less than a week! The buzz is palpable, with a featured story in USA Today making the industry nervous (and awkwardlysilent). This is a huge, key opportunity to get the anti-smart grid message out to the mainstream. Can we rely on mainstream media distribution channels to get the word out? Of course not. Thus the filmmakers have decided to use a grassroots, decentralized method to distribute the film, through Yekra. Here’s how you can be a part of this historic release:
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is considering changes to the exposure policy for radiofrequency (RF) radiation in the United States. The agency has requested comments be submitted by September 3, 2013. It is possible that they may raise these already sky high limits, to suit industry’s greed. That is why it is so crucial to take action, even if you have recently commented to the FCC. More info and links to take action here (do it now!):
3. SOUTHERN CA ‘OPT OUT’ UNDER ATTACK- TAKE ACTION!
SCE and SDG&E have filed extremely confusing and misleading ‘advice letters’ for approval at the Sept. 5th San Francisco CPUC Meeting, regarding their smart meter ‘opt out’ program. See here and here. Intentionally confusing customers with no less than sixteen different names for different meters, it is not at all clear even what they are trying to say. These advice letters would apparently sidestep the existing opt out proceeding and authorize refusal of analog meters to customers requesting an opt out and set in stone extortionate fees for having a “radio off” smart meter. Peevey and his pals at SCE appear to be trying to weasel out of an opt out for millions of So Cal Residents. Time to reign them in. If you live in CA, and have had enough of this underhanded Bulls*** from the CPUC, contact your state legislator and demand they introduce legislation providing at the least a no cost analog opt out for every CA resident, and investigations leading to a possible safety recall of this equipment. Find your state legislator here: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html
4. SM FIRE DEATH IN CA: TRAGIC DETAILS EMERGE
Details have come to light of a man killed by a Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) Smart Meter that caught fire in Vacaville, CA on July 9th, 2010. Larry Nikkel of 230 Arbor St. died from a suspicious electrical fire that consumed his home the day after Wellington Energy, contractors for PG&E, installed a Landis & Gyr “smart” electric meter. A wrongful death suit lawsuit filed by the family against the utility, subcontractor, and meter manufacturer has now been settled for an undisclosed sum.The circumstances surrounding Mr. Nikkel’s death add a grave and tragic chapter to the growing human cost of the ‘smart grid.’ Full article: http://stopsmartmeters.org/2013/06/21/when-smart-meters-kill-the-story-of-larry-nikkel-details-emerge-of-vacaville-ca-smart-meter-fire-death/
5. DR. RONALD POWELL: “NO SUBSTITUTE FOR ROLLBACK”
This is an important document to read and to bring to policy makers.
Dr. Powell’s Biological Effects Chart was produced from a review of the medical research literature on the biological effects of electromagnetic fields (BioInitiative.org). He concludes the following five points:
1. The current FCC Maximum Permitted Exposure (MPE) limits are so high that they provide no protection for the public from the biological effects found in any of the 67 studies.
2. New biologically based RF exposure limits proposed in the BioInitiative 2012 Report are 1 million times lower than current FCC limits and would protect against the biological effects found in nearly all of the 67 studies.
3. A single Smart Meter on a home can produce RF exposure levels that caused the biological effects found in either most or many of the 67 studies, depending on the distance from the Smart Meter.
4. A single Smart Appliance in the home can produce RF exposure levels that caused the biological effects found in nearly half or fewer of the 67 studies, depending on the distance from the Smart Appliance. Multiple Smart Appliances in a home multiply the total exposure.
5. A single Smart Meter on a nearest neighbor’s home can produce RF exposure levels that caused the biological effects found in many of the 67 studies. A given home may have one to eight nearest neighbors, each with a Smart Meter, multiplying the total exposure in the given home.
“Smart Meters are a community concern, not just an individual concern.”-Ronald Powell, PhD Applied Physics
The section on neighbors meters, and how smart meters are a community concern is especially relevant as policy makers decide how to proceed with solutions. Here’s an excerpt of his paper:
“A Single Smart Meter on a Neighbor’s Home Can Produce RF Power Density Levels Shown to Cause Biological Effects
For some locations in a given home, the distance to a neighbor’s Smart Meter may be less than the distance to the resident’s own Smart Meter. Thus, a neighbor’s Smart Meter may be the principal source of radiation for some locations in the given home. The Biological Effects Chart shows that a single Smart Meter can produce RF power densities found to cause biological effects even at distances greater than 20 meters, and certainly up to 100 meters. And the number of neighbors within that range can be large.
There is no substitute for a roll back of all Smart Meters at the community level, or higher.”

“You can’t work for a whole year and then give 47 percent of what you made away and still keep that business afloat,” says Laura Horne, the farmer’s wife.
Farmer had been fighting this kind of treatment from the Government for years. When the raisin farmer was unable to pay the due, he was punished with massive fines and was demanded payments for the raisins which he didn’t surrender. The demands from the Fed would result in either the farmer has to sell the farm, or to be taken the farm away by the Fed.
Unapproved genetically-modified rice trials in U.S. have contaminated the world’s rice supply
GM rice had not been exposed and reported to the public. The field trial was found to be contaminated. Many countries took action on imposing ban of US rice or on imposing a strict certification and testing on all rice import.
During 2006 and 2007 traces of three varieties of unapproved GM rice owned by Bayer CropScience were found in US rice exports in over 30 countries worldwide. At the time of discovery only one of the contaminating varieties (LLRICE62) had approval for cultivation in the US, the other two varieties (LLRICE601 and LLRICE604) had not. None of the contaminating varieties had approval for cultivation or consumption anywhere else in the world.
No GM rice has ever been grown commercially in the US and the source of the contamination is believed to be field trials of herbicide tolerant rice conducted between the mid-1990s and early-2000s by Bayer CropScience (or its precursor companies Aventis CropScience and AgrEvo). Bayer abandoned these trials in 2002. Despite two of their rice varieties, (LLRICE06 and LLRICE62) receiving deregulated status in 2002, none of Bayer’s GM rice varieties have ever been placed on the market US. The USDA official report into the incident identified the field trials as the source of contamination but was unable to decide whether gene flow (cross pollination) or mechanical mixing was the mechanism responsible for the contamination.

The little town of Apple River in northeast Jo Daviess County, Illinois is the hometown of a bee keeper – Terrence Ingram, who was researching Roundup’s effects on bees, which he’s raised for 58 years. When he was absence, Illinois Department of Agriculture unlawful seized his property without a warrant.
To determine whether or not Ingram had American Foulbrood in his hives, Illinois Department of Agriculture removed his bees and hives from his property. The worst part of all, his queens died after Inspector Kivikko and Balson “inspected” his property.
Indian farmer lost in a patent dispute over a genetically modified soybean seed to Monsanto. It was not a good day to the farming community. In my opinion, farmers need to be cautious using Monsanto crops; you don’t want to fight with giant Chemical Corporation.
A unanimous Supreme Court ruled Monday that an Indiana farmer infringed on Monsanto’s patent when he planted soybeans that had been genetically modified by Monsanto without buying them from the agribusiness giant.
In the decision, written by Justice Elena Kagan, the nine justices ruled that “patent exhaustion does not permit a farmer to reproduce patented seeds through planting and harvesting without the patent holder’s permission.”
President Obama signed a spending bill, HR933, into law on last Tuesday. HR 933 was a spending bill aimed at averting a government shutdown and ensuring that the federal government would continue to be able to pay its bills. However, under the Farmer Assurance Provision- Section 735 of the spending Bill, ‘Monsanto Protection Act’ is added, the food and consumer advocates and organic farmers are not in favor of what is put into the Bill.
There are important points in the provision are:
1/ ‘Monsanto Protection Act’ prevent the Federal Court to shut down GMO (Genetically modified organism) or GE (Genetically Engineered) seeds operation.
2/ Even if it is found to be harmful to consumers, Sen. Roy Blunt, Republican of Missouri, actually worked with Monsanto on a provision that in effect allows them to keep selling seeds, which can then go on to be planted
3/ “In this hidden backroom deal, Sen. [Barbara] Mikulski turned her back on consumer, environmental and farmer protection in favor of corporate welfare for biotech companies such as Monsanto,” Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of the Center for Food Safety, said in a statement.
4/ While the Media are focusing on gay marriage, the Bill was passed and signed by President Obama.
5/Disregard we have more than 250,000 voters signed a petition opposing the provision, it won’t stop the Bill moving forward.
Though the Bill lasts for six months, it may find its way to extend the operation. The big bio company is buying time to work into the system and politician may generate more campaign money. It is a win win situation for them, but the consumer loss big time.
If you know they are spraying Antibiotic on organic fruit tree, you may not want to consume it.
Every time you eat an organic apple or pear, you expose your gut flora to measurable levels of streptomycin and tetracycline. This increases your chances of developing resistance to these important antibiotics, both of which are essential to treating human disease. Tetracycline is used to treat common infections of the respiratory tract, sinuses, middle ear, and urinary tract, as well as for anthrax, plague, cholera, and Legionnaire’s disease. Streptomycin is used to treat tuberculosis, tularemia, plague, bacterial endocarditis, brucellosis and other diseases.
A caring Michigan mother who refuses to drug her child with psychiatric medications stands between her Rights and State Rights. Because of her action, the State utilizes its power and brings in the swat teams and a tank for a day long stand off. The questions is, who got to decide what‘s the best medical care for the child? Is Government or the parent? The Government thinks they have the authority to decide what the best care is for the child. But the court disagreed. The court ruled it is the parent jobs to oversea the Medication for the child, not the State.

Protest will be on sidewalk on left hand side at first intersection with Russell Ranch Road. Parking will be on right side at parking area for Marriott, Lure Fish House and Custom Built Burgers (shopping center on SW corner of Lindero Canyon Road and Russell Ranch Road).
Are we in Obesity Crisis? I would think so. Obesity can contribute much health issue and become a great concern in all ages. Why didn’t our government do something about it? That’s not what they do best. Most often, politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them. First we have to look at our food supply:
The US government subsidizes farmers through the Farm Bill to produce high carbohydrate foods such, as corn, wheat, soybeans, and rice. However, farmers are paid, by comparison, very little to grow fresh produce.
This is reflected in supermarket prices. “The real prices of fruits and vegetables between 1985 and 2000 increased by nearly 40 percent, while the real price of soft drinks (a.k.a liquid corn) declined by 23 percent.”
“The reason the least healthful calories in the supermarket are the cheapest, is that those are the ones the Farm Bill encourages farmers to grow.”
“One of the particularly perverse outcomes of the corn subsidies has been to make High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), the sweetener of choice for processed-food producers. Nearly all non-diet sodas now contain HFCS, and it is also in dozens of other food products, from breakfast cereal to chick nuggets.” In addition, it is now being included in lunch meats.
A few months ago, NY Mayor, Bloomberg campaigned against the Obesity, instead of regulating High-fructose-corn syrup, he regulated people to consume soft drink. That was a classic example to what politicians does best.

SACRAMENTO, CA– Resistance to smart meter deployments can vary tremendously, depending on local circumstances. Sometimes a local population is informed, organized and resistant to a smart meter deployment before the men in uniforms and white trucks arrive like some old episode from the Twilight Zone, barging into people’s backyards and installing devices that make people sick.
